Quick answer: the best removalists on the Gold Coast share five things. They publish clear pricing. They're a real, insured business. They send the right truck and crew and know the Coast's access rules. They give you a written quote with no hidden fees and fair booking terms. And they're available and reliable, with reviews you can check. This guide shows what to check for each one, the questions to ask and the red flags to watch for. Under each point, we show how Move Mate Movers measures up, so you can hold us to the same standard.
Spend a few minutes on r/GoldCoast and the same moving stories keep coming up: surprise "service fees", trucks that turn up too small, a TV left out in the rain. Almost all of them can be avoided before you book, if you know what to look for.
The 5 things the best removalists on the Gold Coast have
| # | What the best removalists have | Quick check |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Transparent, published pricing | Can you work out a rough price before you call? |
| 2 | Proper insurance and a real, registered business | ABN, street address, and insurance they'll explain in writing |
| 3 | The right truck and crew, plus local Gold Coast know-how | Do they ask about lifts, stairs, docks and parking? |
| 4 | A clear written quote with no hidden fees and fair terms | Every charge itemised; deposit and rescheduling rules stated |
| 5 | Availability and reliability you can verify | Hours that suit your move, packing options, and reviews on independent sites |
1. Transparent, published pricing
Most local Gold Coast moves are charged by the hour. That's a crew-and-truck rate, a minimum booking and often a call-out or travel fee. Many removalists only give a price over the phone. That makes it hard to compare and easy for extra charges to appear later.
What to check
- Is the hourly rate published, and does it include GST?
- How many movers, and what truck, does that rate cover?
- What's the minimum booking?
- Is there a call-out fee, and how much is it for your suburbs?
- When does the clock start and stop: at the depot or at your door? One r/GoldCoast commenter warned that many removalists charge from the moment they leave their depot until they get back.
Red flags: no price until "we see the job", a rate that doesn't say whether GST is included, or a call-out fee nobody will put a number on.
How Move Mate Movers fits
- $143 per hour including GST for two movers and a truck.
- 2-hour minimum: $286.
- Stairs: $44 per flight.
- A compulsory call-out fee based on your suburb and distance from our Arundel depot. We confirm it before you book.
- Pianos, pool tables and marble items are quoted separately, once you send the details.
- All of this is published on our moving rates and booking details page.

What a Gold Coast move costs: 4 example estimates
Here's how our published rates work out for four common moves. These are example estimates only. The hours are assumptions to show the arithmetic, not a promise of how long your move will take. Each one also has a call-out fee added, based on your suburbs.
| Example move | Assumed time | Stairs | Labour ($143/hr) | Stairs ($44/flight) | Estimate before call-out fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Studio or 1-bed apartment in Southport, lift at both ends, boxes packed | 2 hours (minimum) | None | $286 | $0 | $286 |
| 2-bed walk-up unit in Labrador, 2 flights at pickup, ground-floor delivery | 3 hours | 2 flights | $429 | $88 | $517 |
| 3-bed single-storey house in Helensvale to a two-storey townhouse in Arundel | 5 hours | 1 flight | $715 | $44 | $759 |
| 4-bed two-storey house in Robina, stairs at both ends | 7 hours | 2 flights | $1,001 | $88 | $1,089 |
What makes the hours go up or down: boxes that are sealed and labelled, a fridge emptied and defrosted the day before, how far the truck parks from your door, waiting for lifts or swipe access, and peak-hour M1 traffic. On an hourly rate, every minute the crew waits costs you. Want a number for your move? Use our free quote form.
2. Proper insurance and a real, registered business
"Fully insured" can mean very different things. Public Liability covers damage to property or injury to people caused by the removalist's work. Goods in Transit covers your belongings while they're being moved. NSW Fair Trading notes that removalists aren't required by law to insure your goods, and suggests arranging your own cover.
What to check
- Search the ABN or business name on the free ABN Lookup site (abr.business.gov.au).
- Queensland's Office of Fair Trading suggests checking for a physical address (preferably local) and reviews on sites other than the business's own.
- Ask which insurance they hold, what it covers and what the excess is. Western Australia's Consumer Protection agency suggests asking for a copy of the Certificate of Currency.
- AFRA (Australian Furniture Removers Association) membership is a good sign, though many smaller removalists aren't members.
- Check whether your own contents policy covers items in transit.
Red flags: no ABN, only a mobile number with no address, "fully insured" with no detail, or reluctance to put anything in writing. In December 2020, Queensland's Office of Fair Trading publicly warned consumers to avoid one national removalist after 68 Queensland complaints. They included damaged goods, undersized trucks and demands for extra payment before the job was finished.
How Move Mate Movers fits
- Registered business: Move Mate Movers and Logistics Pty Ltd, ABN 33 700 649 109.
- A physical base at 14 Aspen Way, Arundel QLD 4214, and a direct line, 0413 258 321.
- We hold Public Liability insurance for property damage, subject to policy terms and exclusions.
- We say plainly that this is not Goods in Transit cover, so you can arrange your own cover for valuable or fragile items. Read what our insurance covers.
3. The right truck and crew, plus local Gold Coast know-how
Local know-how looks different in every suburb: towers in Surfers Paradise, stairs in Labrador, complexes in Robina, new builds in Coomera.
A truck that's too small turns one trip into two, and you pay for both. On the Gold Coast, access often matters more than distance: high-rise lifts and loading docks, walk-up units, light rail and narrow streets.
What to check
- Give every removalist the same item list or photos, plus the access at both homes. Then ask: "What size truck and how many movers are you sending?"
- High-rises: book the goods lift and loading dock with building management, and send the confirmed slot to your removalist. Ask about permitted moving hours and car-park height limits.
- Loading zones: under Queensland parking rules, a truck picking up or dropping off goods can generally stop in a loading zone for up to 30 minutes, unless the sign shows otherwise. Many apartment loads take longer, so a dock or driveway is better.
- Light rail: in areas such as Southport, it's an offence to stop on the tramway, so the truck needs to load from a side street, driveway or dock.
- Permits: if the truck must occupy a footpath, verge or traffic lane on a council road, the City of Gold Coast requires an Interference with a Road Permit. The minimum notice is 15 business days for low- or medium-impact activities.
- Stairs: count the flights at both ends so the charge is in your quote.
Red flags: a removalist who doesn't ask about access, or quotes without knowing your inventory. One Gold Coast resident on Reddit said their crew arrived with only half the item list and a truck too small for the job. They then tried to charge extra for a second trip, and didn't have the equipment to move the fridge.
How Move Mate Movers fits
- Two movers on every booking, with 6, 8 or 10-tonne trucks chosen to suit your load. We confirm the truck before moving day.
- Based in Arundel, next door to Southport and close to the M1, so most local jobs don't involve a cross-Coast drive to reach you.
- We ask about floor levels, lifts, docks, stairs and parking at both addresses when you enquire.
- CBD apartment move? Our page on professional movers for Southport apartments covers lifts, loading docks and light-rail parking. See also our home and apartment removals service.
4. A clear written quote with no hidden fees, and fair terms
NSW Fair Trading's guide to choosing a removalist says the quote should be itemised, with every charge accounted for. It also says the contract should list the inventory, the addresses, the dates and how payment works.
What a fair removalist quote should include
- The rate and what it buys. Hourly or fixed, GST included, number of movers and truck size.
- When the clock starts and stops.
- The minimum booking.
- The call-out or travel fee, in dollars, for your suburbs.
- Access charges: stairs per flight, long carries and lift waiting time.
- Heavy or specialist items: pianos, pool tables, marble and safes.
- Packing: included or extra, and who supplies boxes and wrap.
- Furniture dismantling and reassembly: included or extra.
- Insurance: what type, and the excess.
- Deposit, cancellation and rescheduling terms.
- Payment terms and the ABN on the quote. Pay by card or transfer, never in cash halfway through the move.
Red flags, from real experiences:
- A Gold Coast resident on Reddit said their bill came to about $250 more than the quote once a service fee, a booking confirmation fee and a $50 "deposit" were added. The "deposit" turned out to be a fee.
- In a widely reported 2025 case in Canberra, a family said a removalist agreed $900 verbally, with no paperwork, then demanded $1,600 while their belongings were still in the truck. The removalist denied the claims. Never book without a written agreement.
- Watch out for large upfront deposits, cash-only requests and pressure to "book today".
How Move Mate Movers fits
- Our hourly rate, minimum, stairs charge and call-out fee policy are all published, and we spell out your call-out fee and any extras before you book.
- $100 deposit to book.
- Free rescheduling, with no change fee, subject to availability.
- If you cancel because you've changed your mind, the deposit isn't refundable, subject to your rights under Australian Consumer Law. We publish that on our pricing page rather than hiding it.

Copy this table and fill it in for each removalist you're considering. A blank cell is a question you still need to ask.

Compare the estimated totals, not the headline rates. A low hourly rate with a big call-out fee and paid packing can end up costing more.
5. Availability and reliability you can verify
Settlement days, lease ends and office moves don't always fall in business hours. The best removalists on the Gold Coast make it easy to get a date that works, and their track record is public.
What to check
- Can they do the date and start time you need, including evenings or weekends?
- Is packing and wrapping included, or extra?
- Read reviews properly. Look at the one- and two-star reviews for patterns such as damage, lateness, no-shows or hidden fees, and see how the company replies. Be wary of reviews that all sound the same. In 2015 the ACCC penalised a removalist $30,600 over testimonials it alleged were posted under made-up customer names.
- Ask how furniture is protected, and what happens if it rains.
Red flags: no reviews anywhere except the company's own website, or vague answers about care. One person on r/GoldCoast who had moved five times in five years described a footprint on their couch and a TV left out in the rain.
How Move Mate Movers fits
- Open 24 hours, 7 days. Your date and start time are confirmed once we check availability.
- Packing and wrapping are included at no extra service charge with your booked move. We confirm the scope and materials before the day. See our packing and wrapping service.

- Our Google reviews are public. Read them and judge for yourself.
- We also handle office relocations and interstate removals.

Frequently asked questions
How do I choose the best removalist on the Gold Coast?
Look for five things: transparent pricing, proper insurance and a registered ABN, the right truck and crew for your access, a clear written quote with fair terms, and reviews you can verify. Get two or three written quotes and compare the estimated totals, not just the hourly rates.
How much do removalists cost on the Gold Coast?
Most local moves are charged by the hour, plus a minimum booking and often a call-out fee. Move Mate Movers charges $143/hr including GST for two movers and a truck, with a 2-hour minimum ($286), $44 per flight of stairs and a call-out fee based on your suburb. For example, a 3-hour move with 2 flights of stairs is $517 plus the call-out fee.
What's the difference between Public Liability and Goods in Transit insurance?
Public Liability covers damage to property or people caused by the removalist's work. Goods in Transit covers your belongings during the move. Ask every removalist which they hold.
When should I book a Gold Coast move?
As early as you can. If you want to move during Queensland's summer school holidays (12 December 2026 to 26 January 2027), lock in your date well ahead. October to April is Queensland's severe weather season, so ask your removalist how they handle rain.
Do removalists need a deposit?
Many do. A small, clearly stated deposit is normal. Move Mate Movers asks for $100. Be wary of large upfront payments, cash-only requests or "deposits" that turn out to be non-refundable fees.
Are packing and wrapping included?
It varies, so check before you book. With Move Mate Movers, packing and wrapping are included at no extra service charge with your booked move. We confirm the scope and materials beforehand.
What should I do if a removalist damages my furniture?
Take photos straight away, tell the removalist in writing and check what their insurance and terms cover. Under Australian Consumer Law, services must be provided with due care and skill. If you can't resolve it, contact Queensland's Office of Fair Trading (13 QGOV).
Ready for a clear price?
