Arundel is one of the Gold Coast's quieter family suburbs. It has leafy streets, established homes and newer estates, and it sits between Parkwood, Helensvale, Coombabah, Labrador and Biggera Waters. People like it for the space and the easy run to Southport and the M1. When moving day comes, though, picking who to trust with your furniture can feel like a gamble.
Spend ten minutes reading local moving threads on Reddit and the same stories keep coming up. A quote that blew out by a couple of hundred dollars once "service fees" were added. A truck that turned up too small, so the job became two trips (and two lots of hours). Stair fees sprung on the day, a TV left out in the rain, a crew that never arrived at all. Plenty of people say they've moved five or six times and had at least one shocker.
You can avoid most of that with a few questions before you book. This guide gives you seven practical checks to run on any removalist, us included.
We're Move Mate Movers, based at 14 Aspen Way in Arundel. Under each check we've explained how we handle it, so you can compare like for like.
1. Check they actually know the area
A removalist who knows Arundel plans for local quirks before the truck rolls up:
- Estate streets and cul-de-sacs. Some streets are narrow or have cars parked on both sides, which affects truck size and where it can park.
- Homes backing onto bushland. Properties near Coombabah Lakes Conservation Area or the Arundel Hills side often have no rear access, so everything goes out the front.
- Traffic timing. Getting onto the M1 at Helensvale or heading towards Southport at peak hour adds time. If you're paying by the hour, that's your money.
Ask: "Have you moved homes near me before? What truck would you send to my street?"
How Move Mate Movers helps
Our depot is in Arundel, so for most local moves the truck isn't crossing the Coast to reach you. We cover the whole Gold Coast too, from Helensvale and Coomera down to Coolangatta. Tell us about parking, driveways and access at both addresses when you enquire and we'll plan around it.
2. Get a written quote and understand how it's worked out
The biggest complaint we see online is the final bill not matching the quote. That usually comes down to fees that weren't spelled out: call-out or travel charges, "booking fees", stairs and heavy items. One common point from locals is that many removalists charge from the moment they leave the depot until they get back.
Before you book, ask:
- What's the hourly rate?
- What's the minimum charge?
- Is there a call-out or travel fee, and how is it calculated?
- What do stairs and heavy items (pianos, pool tables, marble) cost?
How Move Mate Movers helps
Our rates are published on our moving rates and booking details page:
- $130 per hour for two movers and a truck.
- 2-hour minimum: $260.
- A compulsory call-out fee, based on your suburb and distance from our Arundel depot.
- Stairs: $40 per flight.
- Heavy items: extra charges apply for pianos, pool tables and marble items.
Your total is moving time, plus the call-out fee, plus any of those extras. Ask us for a complete quote before you book and you'll know where every dollar goes.
3. Make sure the right truck and crew are booked
"They sent a truck that was too small" comes up again and again, often because the removalist only had half the item list. Then it becomes two trips and more hours.
Ask: "What size truck are you sending, and how many movers? What do you need from me to get that right?"
How Move Mate Movers helps
Every move comes with two movers and a truck, and we have 6, 8 and 10-tonne options so the truck suits your load. Tell us how many bedrooms you're moving, what furniture you have and the access at each property. Photos or an item list help even more. We confirm truck allocation with you before moving day.

4. Ask what insurance they hold, and what it actually covers
"Fully insured" can mean very different things. Public liability insurance is not the same as goods-in-transit cover for your belongings. Ask exactly what's covered and what the excess is.
How Move Mate Movers helps
We hold Public Liability insurance for property damage, subject to policy terms and exclusions. We're upfront that this is not Goods in Transit or all-items cover. If you have fragile, high-value or specialised items, talk to us before booking and ask for the policy details. You can read the full wording on our insurance details page. If anything goes wrong, contact us directly with your booking details and we'll talk it through.
5. Check how they protect furniture (and your house)
People on Reddit tell stories of footprints on couches, scratched walls and a TV left out in the rain. Gold Coast weather doesn't help, with summer storms rolling in fast and heat that's rough on timber and electronics. Ask how furniture is wrapped and secured, and what happens if it rains.
How Move Mate Movers helps
Packing and wrapping are included at no extra service charge with your booked move. We cover furniture with moving blankets and strap the load inside the truck. Flag fragile pieces, artwork and anything that needs dismantling so we can allow time for it, and confirm the packing scope and materials with us before the day. See our packing and wrapping service for details.

6. Read the reviews properly
Star ratings only tell you so much. A tip from locals is to read the one-star reviews and look for patterns: hidden fees, damage, lateness or poor communication. Also check how the company responds.
How Move Mate Movers helps
We have 19 reviews on our Google Business Profile, and the reviews on our website link back to their Google source. Read them yourself and check whether they mention care, punctuality and price. Those are the things that matter on the day.
7. Know the deposit, cancellation and rescheduling terms
Some of the worst stories involve "booking fees" that turn out to be non-refundable, or a crew that no-shows and still wants the fee. Get the terms in writing before you pay anything.
How Move Mate Movers helps
- Deposit: $100 in advance to book.

Your pre-booking checklist
Before you say yes to any removalist, make sure you have:
- ☐ A written quote showing the hourly rate, minimum and call-out fee
- ☐ Stair and heavy-item charges in writing
- ☐ The truck size and number of movers confirmed
- ☐ Insurance details (what's covered and what isn't)
- ☐ The packing and wrapping scope agreed
- ☐ Deposit, cancellation and rescheduling terms
- ☐ Parking, lift bookings and access sorted at both addresses
- ☐ An item list or photos sent to the removalist
Our Gold Coast moving guide goes through each of these in more detail.
Local tips for moving in or out of Arundel
- Start early in summer. Morning moves beat the afternoon heat and the storms that often build later in the day from about November to March.
- Mind the M1. If you're heading north towards Brisbane or south past Southport, avoid weekday peak times where you can. Friday afternoons are especially slow.
- Clear the kerb. Ask neighbours to keep the street out front clear on moving day, especially in tighter estate streets and cul-de-sacs.
- Book bond cleaning after the truck leaves. If you're renting, schedule the cleaners for after your belongings are out, so they aren't working around boxes.
- Bridging the gap? If your settlement dates don't line up, ask about storage between moves instead of rushing.
- Moving into a unit? For apartments and townhouse complexes, book the lift and loading area with building management, then share the confirmed time with your removalist.

How much does a removalist cost in Arundel?
At Move Mate Movers it's $130 per hour for two movers and a truck, with a 2-hour minimum ($260). On top of that there's a compulsory call-out fee based on your suburb and distance from our Arundel depot, plus charges for stairs ($40 per flight) and heavy items where they apply. Ask for a complete quote before you book.
How do I avoid hidden fees from removalists?
Get a written quote listing the hourly rate, minimum, call-out or travel fee, stair and heavy-item charges, and deposit terms. If something isn't written down, ask about it before you pay a deposit.

We hold Public Liability insurance for property damage, subject to policy terms and exclusions. It isn't Goods in Transit or all-items cover, so talk to us about high-value items before booking.
